#437: Tips for Contacting a Recruiter

Border

When contacting an executive search firm, always begin by introducing yourself and explaining the purpose of your call. For example:

“Hello, my name is Sarah Smith, and I’m looking to speak with a recruiter who specializes in Medical Affairs.”

You might be surprised by how often candidates skip this simple introduction and immediately begin discussing their background or job search. A professional introduction sets the tone for a productive conversation.

It’s also important to call from a quiet location with a reliable phone connection. Background noise, interruptions, or poor reception can make it difficult for the recruiter to focus on the conversation and create the best possible first impression.

Finally, have an up-to-date copy of your résumé or CV readily available. Recruiters often request it during or immediately after the call, and being prepared allows the conversation to move forward without delay.

A little preparation can go a long way in helping you make a positive impression and start building a valuable relationship with a recruiter.
