A successful interview starts with preparation. Before your interview, take time to think through your background, experiences, education, and career goals. Employers want to understand not only what you have accomplished, but also who you are, what motivates you, and how you may fit within their organization.
Be prepared to answer questions in these four key areas:
1. Personal
Interviewers may want to learn more about you beyond your resume.
- Be prepared to briefly tell the interviewer about yourself and your background.
- What are your interests or hobbies outside of work?
- Why are you interested in interviewing with this organization?
- What attracted you to the company or position?
2. Experience
Be ready to discuss your professional accomplishments and the skills you have developed throughout your career.
- What job-related skills have you developed?
- What accomplishments are you most proud of?
- Describe a situation where you identified a problem and provided a solution for your employer.
- Be prepared to provide specific examples that demonstrate your skills and contributions.
3. Education
Your educational background can provide insight into your interests, decision-making, and development.
- Why did you choose your major or field of study?
- Why did you choose your college or university?
- Were you involved in any campus activities, organizations, or leadership opportunities?
- How has your education prepared you for your career?
4. Career Goals
Employers want to understand where you see yourself going professionally and how the position fits into your long-term plans.
- What are your professional aspirations?
- How do you prioritize and manage multiple assignments or competing deadlines?
- What type of management or leadership style do you work best with?
- Where do you see yourself growing professionally over the next several years?
Be Prepared and Be Yourself
The goal of interview preparation is not to memorize answers. Instead, think about your experiences and have several specific examples ready to discuss. Preparation will help you communicate confidently, stay focused, and have a more natural conversation with the interviewer.
