According to a recent CNBC and SurveyMonkey survey, nearly 40% of students and workers currently enrolled in school have considered changing their major, field of study, or coursework because of AI. Among students who are not employed, that figure rises to 44%.
The uncertainty extends beyond college majors. Students are also reconsidering the industries they want to enter, the skills they need to develop, the jobs they pursue, and even the companies they want to work for. The survey found that 31% of people enrolled in school have changed or considered changing their target industry because of AI, while 45% have reconsidered the skills they are developing.
For employers, this shift highlights an increasingly important consideration: the workforce of tomorrow may not follow traditional career paths. As AI changes job responsibilities and the skills employers value, adaptability, curiosity, and the ability to learn may become just as important as a candidate’s specific degree or previous job title.
