Communication is the foundation of every successful relationship — especially in recruiting. Whether working with candidates or clients, being direct, clear, and intentional matters more than ever.
Here’s a recent example.
A candidate completed an interview, and we were told to “keep them warm.” During our follow-up, we asked if the team had made a final decision and whether we should release the candidate from consideration.
The response?
“We are moving forward. Hope this helps.”
Unfortunately, it did not help. It created more confusion and required yet another follow-up asking, “Moving forward with what?”
The final response:
“Another candidate.”
This is exactly why clear communication matters.
If we are relying more on emails and text messages instead of phone conversations, then our written communication needs to be precise, direct, and free of gray areas. Answer the actual question being asked. Never assume the person reading your message can interpret what you meant but did not say.
In recruiting, communication impacts people’s careers, time, and emotions. Clarity is not just professional — it is respectful.
