There is always more to a resume than the words on the page. Behind every resume is a person and a story.
If we only glance at “job hopping” or “gaps between roles” without taking the time to truly listen, we risk overlooking exceptional talent. As recruiters, our responsibility is not just to match keywords to job descriptions, but to understand the “why” behind a candidate’s journey and identify the best fit for our clients.
True story: I recently submitted a candidate to a client who had an outstanding track record of helping position their company as a recognized leader in a specific disease state. In one role alone, they spent four years delivering remarkable accomplishments and measurable impact.
Yet the feedback from HR focused solely on one thing: “This candidate has had five jobs in six years.”
What they failed to consider were the mergers, acquisitions, failed product launches, and organizational changes that were completely outside of the candidate’s control. They overlooked the fact that this individual was willing to take strategic risks, consistently performed at a high level, and was so well regarded that they continuously secured new opportunities. They also failed to trust the recruiter they hired to assess the candidate’s soft skills, adaptability, and leadership potential.
The saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover” absolutely applies in hiring.
Take the time to listen to the story behind the resume. Companies that make quick assumptions based solely on tenure or optics may be missing out on their very best hires.
